Dear friends,

Happy new year to one and all! When we established the Stepping Strong Fund almost one year ago, we set an ambitious goal: to raise $3 million for life-saving innovations in medical research, care, and training to help patients recover from traumatic, athletic, military, or disease-related injuries. Now, as we enter 2015, we are achieving—and surpassing—our goals and have so many reasons to be grateful. With your help, we have raised nearly $3.8 million, gained international awareness and support, and provided a much-needed voice for trauma survivors. The momentum is incredible, and we’re excited to move forward at full speed.

Stepping Strong Innovator Awards. Recently, two trauma-related research teams received $100,000 seed grants through the inaugural Stepping Strong Innovator Awards competitions. We are so grateful to everyone who made these competitions a success—from the 18 researchers who submitted applications, to the multidisciplinary medical experts who narrowed down the field to six finalists, to our review panelists, to the more than 4,100 worldwide voters. You can read more about the winning projects in the Transforming Trauma Research section below.

Stepping Strong Trauma Fellowship. Having allocated more than $1.3 million to trauma research through the Stepping Strong Innovator Awards and the Stepping Strong Research Scholars programs, it gives us great pleasure to announce the third of our three program areas, the Stepping Strong Plastic Surgery Trauma Fellowship, is now underway. This fellowship, the first of its kind, was officially approved by the Partners Education Committee in December, paving the way for Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) to train the next generation of plastic surgeons in advanced, innovative techniques for treating acute and complex traumatic injuries. Meet the physician-scientists who are designing this innovative education program.

Marathon Weekend. We are excited to be running the B.A.A. 5K race for the second year in a row (details on the right). We are also delighted to welcome 32 awesome runners to the 2015 Stepping Strong Marathon Team. With their passion and your support, we hope to raise record-breaking funds this year.

Last, please join us in sending thoughts and prayers to the family of Dr. Michael J. Davidson, a BWH doctor who died in another traumatic and senseless act of violence on January 20.

With love and gratitude,
Audrey, Steven, Danielle, and Gillian
